I’ve learned that preparing for the unexpected not only allows me to be able to take control of the situation, but also it gives me peace of mind knowing that I’m ready for any small crisis.
How many times have you encountered one or more of the following?
- You run out of gas.
- Your car breaks down in the middle of traffic.
- You are out of town and you forgot to pack your prescription medication.
- You are checking into a hotel and your debit card doesn't work.
- Your home has a plumbing emergency.
Not only are these situations upsetting but also they seem to catch us off guard each time they happen! Here are some tips that can ease your anxiety.
- First and foremost, buy a cell phone. It doesn't have to be fancy or expensive. A simple phone with local and long distance service will do.
- Save at least $100 to put aside. Ask the bank to convert your cash into a $100 bill. You are less likely to spend a large bill. Put this money in your wallet or purse so you have it at all times. Now you are able to pay for an emergency hotel room, meal, gas, or prescriptions.
- Ask your neighbors and friends for home repair referrals and program each service's number into your phone.
- Exchange all your phone numbers (home, work, cell, etc.) with your next-door neighbor in case of an emergency.
- Exchange all phone numbers with a couple of trusted friends.
- Program the following numbers in your cell phone:
- The direct line and general number to your bank or credit union
- A cab service
- A car repair shop
- Your doctor(s)
- ICE numbers (In Case of Emergency numbers such as a relative, roommate, or spouse)
- To program your ICE number(s), the display should actually read “ICE Joe Smith.” Should there be an accident and you are unable to communicate with emergency personnel, they will search for an “ICE” number in your cell phone and call it. Your preparation may just save your life.
- A towing service
- Your vet
- Your pharmacist or drug store
- Any other number that might be necessary in an emergency
With this preparation, you are ready to combat common emergencies!
