A press release published in London today highlights the finding of a new study published in a recent NeuroReport Journal article. The study found that the pedunculopontine nucleus, or PPN, can be safely and effectively used as the target for deep brain stimulation therapy in advanced Parkinson's cases.
Deep brain stimulation is typically applied to the subthalamic nucleus, but now surgeons and clinicians will have an alternative. Also, the researchers suggest it may be possible and beneficial to stimulate both regions at the same time.
