I’ve always been interested in acupuncture; I have seen people get a tremendous amount of relief from it.
Acupuncture itself is both strange and intriguing since it promises relief by pricking the skin and placing a needle in several parts of the body. Acupuncture somewhat coincides with reflexology; the same principles of reflexology are integrated in this ancient Chinese practice.
My interest was piqued when my sister tried it this week and called me from the doctor’s office, breathlessly excited that I should have it done too. She went on to tell me that the doctor mentioned that acupuncture relieves symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Whether this practice works or not, I am giving it a try. I have to wait until the doctor can fit me in, but as soon as I have it done, I can let you know firsthand if I feel any differently and relay any other information the doctor will share with me.
Parkinson’s disease occurs when there is an imbalance of dopamine and acetylcholine, chemicals produced in the brain. The usual symptoms that occur as a result are tremors, difficulty in movement, and stiffness. In Chinese medicine, Parkinson’s disease is related to Liver Wind. According to this theory of Chinese medicine, the liver controls the smooth circulation of energy. When the Liver Wind is deficient or off balance in any way the ease of movement is impaired. By placing acupuncture needles in strategic areas on the body, it focuses energy and healing to that area of the body. A change in diet and exercise may be recommended as well. According to experts, the earlier you have this treatment after diagnosis, the more effective it will be.
Stay tuned! I will let you know what the experience is like and whether it helped my symptoms.
