A story few pharmaceutical reps are talking about, but many World Parkinson Congress attendees are asking about is the role of the new drug Rasagiline. MyParkinsonsInfo wrote about Rasagiline in an October post. It is available in Europe and Israel. However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been silent about its next steps with Rasagiline.
There is research that suggests that Rasagiline may protect existing brain cells and delay the progression of PD. Health care professionals at the World Parkinson’s Congress speculate this neuroprotective affect throws a curve ball at the FDA. Stated one attendee: “The FDA is accustomed to studying drugs that directly address current symptoms. They don’t know what to do when they are presented with a drug that wants to be labeled for prevention and protection.”
