In the last few months the Iowa APDA chapter opened a new information and referral center, to improve the support of people living with Parkinson’s in the state. The center dispenses advice and suggestions on how to live better with Parkinson’s – including staying active.
“We are stressing the importance of exercise to our support groups,” explains Sam Erwin, the center’s coordinator. “We have formed a small but mighty group that is traveling to New Mexico to hike.”
The six-day hiking tour will explore many of the different wonders in the areas around Santa Fe. If you are able to hike 34 miles within those six days, this trip may be just right for you. It has been customized to allow for many of the needs of people living with Parkinson’s. This small group from Iowa welcomes others who are interested in joining them. You can learn more information by visiting the APDA Iowa site. For detailed information, contact the Iowa APDA Information & Referral Center in Des Moines at 515.241.6379, or toll free at 1.877.872.6386.
A hiking excursion may not be for everyone. "I have also discovered that for some folks it is not walking, but carving or quilting that allows them to continue moving," Erwin says.
What is Your Nutrition IQ? This article from the Indianapolis Star offers great insight on nutrition. Fortunately it encourages us to eat more onions, black raspberries, sweet potatoes, yams, turkey, and cranberries. Sounds like Thanksgiving!
