DUODOPA is a new and unique treatment based on continuous dopaminergic stimulation by means of a formulation of the well-known substances, levodopa and carbidopa, dispersed as a viscous gel. Using a patient-operated portable pump, the drug is continuously delivered via a tube directly into the upper small intestine, where it is rapidly absorbed. This delivery system ensures a more even supply and uptake compared with the conventional combination of tablet treatment.
In Sweden, where it has been available for almost three years, DUODOPA results in improved mobility for many patients with advanced Parkinson's disease. It is also available in many European countries.
An interesting note from this article - patients in the picture receive the medicine through a tube that enters their body through the nose. From there the tube travels down the esophagus, through the stomach and into the intestine. Many patients receiving DUODOPA get it through a tube surgically inserted through the skin into the intestine.
In the US, DUODOPA has advanced through Phase II clinical trials, and Phase III trials should start soon, we anticipate.
