Embryonic Stem Cell Research is an Issue of Humanity, Not Just Parkinson's Disease

by StaffEmotional Impacts

Believe it or not some comical things occur with Parker and I, and also occurred to Joey and I due to my Parkinson's disease. When I was first diagnosed, PD and laughter did not go together. It would have been like mixing oil and water. But time and the wonderful people in my life have helped my sense of humor, although a bit off the wall at times, return and help get me through the day.

But I must comment on my column in my local paper and also the information, totally devoid of brevity, that I placed in the form of a letter on congress.org.

I regret that embryonic stem cell research has become a political issue. For me it always has been, and will continue to be, an issue of humanity. I got involved in writing about this issue because I want better treatments and ultimately a cure for Parkinson's disease and many other conditions. I learned that it has been standard procedure for a long time that the federal government performs basic scientific research; and private companies get involved when the federal government shows research that has some real potential to do good. When the case is made for further exploration, private companies get involved. Is this a good or a bad thing?

I suspect there are both good points and bad. Like many things in life, it is neither black nor white, but gray. I have always written in a factual and respectful manner. People may agree or disagree with me. If you would like to know more, you may check out the link above. I want to be responsible, and let you know where I get my information. Some of the sources from which I gather information include:

Fortunately, today the House of Representatives voted to fund stem cell research that the government has refused to finance to date. President Bush now has a big decision to make.

Discussing the Many Issues We Live With
There are many aspects of Parkinson's disease I have not yet experienced and would not feel comfortable or responsible writing about. The big issue for me is maintaining my mobility. However, I do have contacts who could address issues with which I have little experience. What comes to mind follows: "psychological side effects from Parkinson's itself or inadequately monitored medication." I am most appreciative this concern was brought to my attention. I would like to put a questionnaire on myparkinsonsinfo.com so we can know what your information needs are and be responsive to them. My Parkinson's Info is currently working to develop the ability to do small polls, so we can communicate how Parkinson's disease affects each of us. From there we can draw a picture of how Parkinson's disease affects thousands of us.

For now if you would like to tell us about your life with Parkinson's disease, we would welcome your email at mnilsen@myparkinsonsinfo.com.
