Parkinson’s patients can eventually develop dementia. This non-motor effect of Parkinson’s disease is cause for concern. Still there are ways to overcome memory loss by using memory aids. Memory aids are common and many people use them on a daily basis. We know them as grocery lists, calendars, etc.
There are two types of memory aids: external and internal. Here are some examples of helpful external memory aids:
External aids
- Medication dispensers and watches with beepers can help you remember to take the right amount of medicine at the scheduled time. Alarms and timers are also helpful reminders.
- An answering machine is a necessity if you cannot get to the phone in time to take calls. You can also save messages to refresh your memory. Use the saved message on your answering machine if you misplace your appointment card for your next doctor visit.
- Mini cassette recorders can be used to make grocery lists, reminders of appointments, chores, or special events.
- Journals are an effective tool that can help you track how you are doing with Parkinson’s disease. Journals help you and your doctor assess how well you are doing with a new medication, exercise, diet, or other areas you choose to track. Journals serve as reminders of all those things you want to ask or tell the doctor during a visit.
- Highlighters can be used after you print out journal copies for your doctor. You can highlight important or problematic items so your doctor can glance at and immediately see your concerns. The doctor can read the journal in its entirety at a less busy time.
- If you have a computer, you can access a calendar on your e-mail account and keep track of appointments and meetings online. Some Wweb sites will send you e-mail reminders for appointments, special events, and birthdays.
You can use the above tried-and-true measures and technology aids to keep your memory sharp. In Part 3, some internal memory aids will be discussed.
