"Have you been looking for a movement disorders specialist?" I asked.
She did not understand my question. So I explained that she needed to have her husband visit with a neurologist that focuses on movement disorders like Parkinson's.
Movement disorders specialists complete a fellowship after their neurology residency. This is an additional one or two years focusing their work and study on movement disorders like Parkinson's disease, multiple system atrophy, Huntington's disease, and Alzheimer's disease.
My friend is now on the Internet and phone contacting university hospitals close to her. They will help her identify the the Parkinson's expert closest to her. I've also forwarded the results of an internet search that I made on the National Parkinson Foundation physician referral system.
Some cities and towns do not have movement disorders specialists. Patients in rural areas will often travel once or twice a year to see one. They will then visit a general neurologist close to their home for emergencies or small issues that come up.
