Balance problems are often high on the list of complaints that PD patients vocalize. For many there are medications and physical therapy modalities that can improve balance. Some patients in New York have come together to dance in hopes of improving balance, as well as many other aspects of movement. Certainly, dancing is not the ideal therapy for everyone. For some patients getting up and walking each day is an admirable challenge.
This article from Columbia University extols the virtues of a dance class especially for PD patients. As you read it you will certainly note the physical benefits that people point out. You may also be just as impressed with the social benefit that the dancers express.
If you have concerns about your balance and ability to dance, please consult your neurologist prior to beginning a dance class. You will notice in this article that some of the dancers rely on canes, walkers or dancing partners for stability and strength.
