If you are taking an MAO inhibitor for Parkinson's disease there are some foods that could be risky for you.
MAO-B inhibitors like Azilect (generic name rasagiline), Eldepryl (generic name selegiline), and Zelepar (generic name extended release selegiline) can respond dangerously to a digestive chemical present in with aged foods. Certain wines, cheeses, pickles and meats as well as some decongestants contain pressor amines.
A reaction between MAO inhibitors and pressor amines can cause blood pressure surges. A few patients have been known to have heart attacks or experience other heart-related problems.
If you are taking an MAO inhibitor ask your doctor for some coaching on your diet and decongestant use.
