Directly across the street from me, I have a neighbor living with Parkinson’s. It has progressed very rapidly in his case. His wife has been an angel. She and I talk frequently. We talk about her grown children, and her grandchildren. We share a little neighborhood news. We talk about her husband, and how he is doing. We talk about how she is doing as a caretaker.
Her load is heavy, but she truly bears it well. There have been a few times when she’s needed a break. Her husband still likes to try to walk, even though it is so challenging for him. His falls try her patience, but they never try her love.
I reflected on my good neighbor across the street as I read
this story about a couple that has been married for 57 years. Helen Welch, has been living with Parkinson’s for 20 years. Her husband also battles serious health issues, as he takes care of his wife. You may even say that they are co-carevers. You can see where this love came from, as you learn about he patiently visited her 57 years ago as a fiancé. I encourage you to read this story, and recognize the love of a caregiver. Thanks to all of you who support someone who needs you.
