If you watch the news about new drugs that may come available for Parkinson's disease, you have read about safinamide. We told you about safinamide back in May, when some encouraging research was presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Neurology. When combined with a dopamine agonist or levodopa, safinamide appears to help people. It appeared to lessens motor symptoms and improves activities of daily living. Patients in the clinical trial also reported improvement in cognitive performance—a sought after effect.

GENEVA, Switzerland - Merck Serono S.A. announced this week that Phase III data on Safinamide, a new agent in late-stage development for the treatment of Parkinson's disease symptoms, was presented by Professor Fabrizio Stocchi at the American Academy of Neurology's 59th Annual Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts. The data comes from a 6-month (24 week), randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled, international trial.

There is another treatment that just entered phase II of clinical trials called CERE-120. We wrote a blog entry about CERE-120 last fall, when it completed phase I clinical trials. Recently Ceregene, CERE-120's manufacturer, began recruiting for it's phase II clinical trial. It plans to enroll 51 patients with advanced Parkinson's disease at nine medical centers in the United States.
