A recent study from Boston University showed lower rates of Parkinson's disease among people who took statins. Such findings cause people to speculate that statins may prevent Parkinson's disease. It would be wonderful to learn of this additional benefit from of a drug that helps prevent cardiovascular disease. Nevertheless, this may not be helpful news for someone living with Parkinson's disease right now. It is too late to prevent the disease for the more than 1 million Americans already living with it.

Prx2 is an enzyme, or protein building block, that exists inside brain cells. It helps neutralize some byproducts a cell creates as it generates its own energy. It is an antioxidant.
A Canadian research team concluded Parkinson's disease can occur when Prx2 breaks down and fails to remove toxins from brain cells. Drug developers could potentially create a pharmaceutical that could protect Prx2 from failing, and introduce an effective treatment for Parkinson's disease. It is too soon to know if it would be effective at reversing or slowing Parkinson's disease. However, it's potential for preventing Parkinson's disease could be remarkable.
