The human eye is an amazing creation. In the quote above, Shakespeare looked to Juliet's eye as a source of light. Science demonstrates that the eye takes in light. In addition to these two contrary actions, the eye serves many purposes, even beyond the amazing realm of vision. However, like so many things, Parkinson's disease can interfere with the wonder. It can short-circuit the eye's ability to follow instructions, and its ability to transmit clear and organized messages back to the brain.

A couple of years ago, a Parkinson's patient wrote in to the BMJ (formerly known as the British Medical Journal) after reading an article in the same publication about living with Parkinson's disease. A quote from her letter captures a frustration that friends, family, and medical personnel often overlook: "My mind in tandem with my limbs seems to go through the same 'ons' and 'offs', which can make the management of life quite chaotic."
